LEUCOTHOE - The Leucothoe Scarletta also known as Dog Hobble is an evergreen shrub that produces arching branches and long slender glossy leaves in dark red that take on more greenish tones as it matures. This attractive plant’s leaves then change from bronze to burgundy red in the colder months of Autumn into Winter. In late Spring bunches of small white pitcher shaped flowers appear along the stems. This hardy shrub requires a sheltered location in partial shade but the leaves do take on an almost metallic look when in bright sunlight. This shrub is ideal for growing in a pot or container or for filling gaps in garden borders in moist well draining acid soil. If the soil conditions are more alkaline, mixing in some ericaceous compost will help increase the acidic levels in the soil.ONGOING CARE - This shrub is low maintenance, so very little pruning is required but can be undertaken to help maintain a more compact rounded shape. Prune in late Spring after flowering to remove dead, diseased, or misplaced branches.
