It is a nitrogen-fixing plant and will replenish this nutrient back into the soil. It is a deciduous, twining climber that is native to China. It is hardy to all colder temperatures in the UK. The leaves are ovate in shape, approximately 5 cm in length and are formed in odd-pinnately compounds. Following the blooming of the flowers, an elongated seed pod which is brownish in colour is produced. Most plants of these species are grafted due to the length of time it takes a mature plant to produce flowers from seed.
