Berberis Atropurpurea Nana Japanese Barberry Deciduous Shrub

This plant does well in full sun, where it will show off its deepest colours. It can adjust to partial-shaded areas, but in those areas its deep red colour will turn greener. It is also tolerant of a variety of soils and watering conditions, except for poorly draining, water-logged areas. At the beginning of the season, new growth leaves form in a startling array of fiery reds and flaming oranges. The foliage quickly settles into its more standard colours of deep-red, burgundy and purplish green. The yellow flowers form in clusters in the spring time and later small, red berries appear. In the autumn months, the foliage will more uniformly change colour to a deep-crimson red before falling off in preparation for the winter months. A pest to watch out for is the sawfly, as they can strip the plant almost completely of its foliage. They are considered a hardy plant and can tolerate harsh winters. As the Atropurpurea is a compact species, they work well in areas where a lower hedge or path border is desirable. In addition, they work well for ground covering of banks and slopes. Pot Size: 9cm Plant Height (Inc. Pot): 15-25cm Characteristics: It is a dwarf shrub with deep reddish-brown obovate leaves. Growth & Spread: It is a slow grower, eventually reaching heights and spreads of 1.0 m Flourishing Season: It has yellow flowers in the spring, followed by red berries. Water & Maintenance: Water until established. It is a very low maintenance plant, that tolerates various conditions.
